Sven to Sporting and other rumours

The end of the season is here, Porto won the Cup of Portugal on Sunday and their manager Jesualdo Ferreira announced he’d be staying on for another two years.

More interesting than that however is the possibility of Sven Goran Eriksson turning up at Sporting.

That is what Sporting presidential candidate Paulo Pereira Cristovao is basing his campaign on, and it is likely to gain him some support considering Sven’s record when he was at Benfica.

Two stints on the red side of Lisbon saw him win the league twice, the Cup of Portugal once, as well as UEFA Cup and European Cup runners-up medals.

The only thing that could be pulling Eriksson elsewhere is the Portsmouth job, although they’re apparently thinking about Claudio Ranieri and his inferior English skills if Svennis doesn’t show up.

Meanwhile the 30-year-old carcass of former Portsmouth, Tottenham, Porto and current Rangers flame Pedro Mendes is being linked with Sporting and Lazio, as both apparently see him as likely to add something to their title pushes next season.

Someone should tell them that winning the Scottish league doesn’t actually make you any good, rather it makes you a Rangers or Celtic player.

Porto defender Bruno Alves is still banging on about going to Inter, Barcelona or Real Madrid, although he is quoted on Goal.com as saying “there is nothing concrete yet”.

This is clearly not true. Take walls and pavements for instance.
