Over the Christmas and New Year period we have been extremely slack in our output. This has been for a variety of reasons of which I won't bore you with, but I will aim to never again move house in the last week of the year!

Technical issues associated with moving and getting re-connected with the 'world wide web' have extended our hiatus.

Rest assured that we will be back soon to continue coverage of the world's biggest sport with our usual expertise..

Champions League draw comes up trumps

Today saw the draw for the last sixteen of the Champions League, or if you like, when the competition starts to get juicy. The knock-out stage means that there is little chance for a respite if a team has a poor result, and for the neutrals at least, there is always the chance of enjoying a penalty shoot-out.

There are two clear stand-out ties to whet the appetite, Manchester United will face AC Milan and Chelsea will come up against Inter Milan. Both fixtures will be heavily built-up by the press, with the focus on returning 'heroes'.

World Cup: six months to whip yourself into a frenzy

Details

The draw for next year's World Cup in South Africa took place on Friday evening amid an expected amount of pomp and hype. There was endless build-up to the coverage, followed by the actual coverage of the draw itself on Sky Sports News. The broadcaster is never one to miss an opportunity to milk an event.

Personally I ended up plumping for watching it live on BBC 2. Not that I'm a big fan of Jonathan Pearce's commentary, but I could at least bare the clichéd platitudes of Lineker's motley crew.

A tale of three derbies

Details

Most neutrals gearing up for last weekend's football action would have found it difficult not to be bombarded by the fevered anticipation of three particular matches, especially if you reside in the UK.

I'm not referring to the clash of Portugal's titan's, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica (0-0 by the way!). No, rather the Merseyside derby that was followed by Arsenal's clash with Chelsea and finally Barcelona and Real Madrid in El Clasico.

So said Diane de Poitiers sometime in the early 1500s. She was no doubt completely unaware at the time that she was uncannily summing up the challenge facing the teams fighting out the 2009 Brasilerão title race.
