AZ or not to AZ? The Eredivisie is the Answer

Details

Now for an update on the Eredivisie, and a look at how the football giants of the Dutch lowlands have been fairing. To be honest there has been little change in the standings. As the weeks move on AZ Alkmaar continue to exuberate a dominance on Dutch football, which resembes Manchester Utd's current control in the Premiership.

 

 

 

Last weekend they again demonstrated how accomplished they have become, particularly at home, by the way in which they dominated and dismissed FC Groningen 3-0. The visitors are far from incompetent either, as they themselves are chasing a Uefa Cup spot in the table, and their defeat left them still in sixth place. For those who flutter on football, AZ Alkmaar for now are the Dutch equivalent of backing Celtic or Rangers to win a league game, particularly when at home.

Football is a game, of two halves none the less, and it has spawned a raft of internet football games that can broadly be split into two halves.

 

The good and the downright piss poor.

 

In the first of a possible weekly feature, I’ll walk you through some of the football games the internet has to offer, rating them or more likely slating them along the way.

 

Holy goaly Batman!!

If the Portuguese League were an episode of Batman Porto would be Catwoman, Benfica would be Batman and Sporting would be Robin.

Porto are always sleek, attractive, and have the classiest strip, while Benfica think they’re the star of the show but are surviving on the glory of past performances.

In contrast to the classy blacks of the Cat and the Bat Sporting stand out like a sore thumb in their green and white. They also spend most of the time looking like inadequate fannies.

 

Capital punishment for Barça means capital gains for Real & Atlético

Details

Real Madrid found the perfect tonic for their midweek Benayoun blues with a 2-0 win at Espanyol on Saturday. 

 

Espanyol, full of energy and confidence having taken Barça's scalp just last week, fought hard to hold Real till just past the hour mark, but  vicious challenge from Román Martínez brought down Guti just outside the box. The whistle blew and Guti dusted himself down and buried the resulting free-kick top left corner.  

 

 

The perfect goal and other Italian shenanigans

Details

What makes the perfect goal? For some it is the culmination of a free-flowing attacking move that demonstrates gliding passing and movement. Take for instance Estebian Cambiasso’s goal at the 2006 World Cup, or Carlos Alberto’s strike against Italy in 1970.  

 

For others, the sharp electrifying shock of a stunning shot is of greater satisfaction. If that’s the case then few come better than Giuseppe Mascara’s 50 yard volley.
