As I wonder what to write about for my first proper 90minutesonline article, I find myself clicking through the “Sports” feeds on my Google Reader for inspiration. It becomes apparent, however, that most stories are either too ugly, too fictional or too cricket to bother reporting on. That, and professional journalists have already beaten me to it.

And so I turn my attention to Altrincham FC, from the town in which I grew up. I’ve noticed in the last week that their start to this season’s Blue Square Premier (Conference to you and I) is rather better than usual. Ten points from their first four games, and second only on goal difference, may go some way towards avoiding the usual last-day escape from relegation.

Two weeks ago today, I was watching this game:

Masigira Ladies were playing Mpandangindo in finals of the Hoja League, down in the furthest south west corner of Tanzania. With evening looming, and of course no floodlights, Mpandangindo turned up an hour late with only seven players. Masigira were therefore awarded a 1-0 lead before the match even started.

Without the money to hire a bus, and only one public bus a day in the wrong direction, arriving at the pitch full strength was always going to be difficult for Mpandangindo. But transport problems would not be allowed to stop the match entirely.

A news story that caught my eye this week was that of die-hard fan Kirk Bradley, who has had “Manchester City – Champions League Winners 2011” stamped onto his arm. Unlikely to say the least.

He is not the first, nor will he be the last terrace tosspot to get a dubious tattoo. His fellow Citizens fanatic Christopher Atkinson was foolish enough to get ‘Kaka’ scrawled across his chest when they were in talks with him last January. If Mr. Atkinson continues the trend of getting the names of players that Man City are linked to inked onto his body then he’ll end up looking a bit like that leopard chump.

 

Premier League- here we go again!

There's been plenty of football on offer in the last couple of weeks for those of you who are impatient for the summer transition to the new season. It started with the Eredivisie and then last weekend saw the kick-off to the English Football Leagues, as well as the new Bundesliga and Ligue 1 campaigns (more of which next week).

Today though is the big one, the quickest, most physical and most commercial of the world's domestic leagues- the Premier League is due to get underway. Millions of fans will go through the turnstiles this season and many more will watch on TV, ideally it would be the other way round, but that's another story.

President of FIFA and perennial xenophobe Sepp Blatter is often the subject of derision and criticism.

 

When he’s not making ludicrously sexist remarks about female footballers needing to wear tighter shorts or idiotic comments about Cristiano Ronaldo being a slave at Manchester United, he’s incurring people’s wrath by banging on about there being too many foreign Johnnies in domestic teams.
