You cannot be Serie A-s!

Some people said the draw for the second round of the Champions League was an exciting one. The thing is, some people are idiots. The fact that many of the best teams were paired against each other only means that the latter stages will be bereft of the highest quality. Nowhere is this more apparent than the Manchester United-Inter Milan tie. 

 

Both Man U and Inter look set to be deservedly crowned champions of their respective domestic competitions. Either way we will be denied one of the most exciting teams in the tournament in the quater-finals, with the loss of an array of attacking talent.

Liga Sagres - Invisible legs, awful hair and some other stuff

There was only one game in Portugal this weekend as Porto took on Benfica in front of a massive 50,110.

 

The Dragons and the Eagles began the match as the top two in the league and finished it as the top two, although Benfica will feel they were robbed of first place by one of the worst refereeing decisions of the season.

Pompey put Adams out to p-ass-ture & Chelsea have a big vacancy to Phil

A brutal day in Premiership history as two more managers are slain, ruthlessly deposed from their thrones after only brief reigns. Firstly, the Pompey hierarchy opted to predictably drop the dead (weight) donkey, then somewhat more sensationally, ‘Big’ Phil Scolari was (Brazilian) w-axed.  

 

The first casualty was by far the least surprising. That is of course, unless you are as gormless as the pink slip recipient Tony Adams, who stated “I am a little bit surprised but results haven't been good”.

The footballing lexicon

Football as a sport isn’t synonymous with a wide and varied diction. Unlike cricket with its articulate commentators and university educated players, football doesn’t lend itself quite so readily to eloquence.  

 

The consequence of such a stunted vocabulary is that the few words in common parlance have a greater depth of meaning. Here are a few terms used to describe players and their deeper connotations.  

 

Playmaker [noun]: Doesn’t defend but doesn’t score many either. 

 

Typically English [adjective] (1. He’s a typically English centre-forward): Lacking in technical and tactical know-how.
